Call For Papers
The Call For Papers for AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2009 will be open in the fall of 2008.
The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) extends an invitation to submit abstracts of papers to be considered for presentation at AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2009, August 10-13 at the Washington DC Convention Center.
AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2009 will be the premiere forum for reviewing, assessing and discussing the successes and shortcomings of current & future unmanned systems both defense and civilian. The conference, with an expected record turnout, will bring together the key leaders and decision-makers in the industry. AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2009 program will also include government program updates, technology briefings, university research and operational reports representing ground, air and maritime unmanned systems. Officials from government and user organizations around the world will be in attendance and participating in the symposium program.
As the largest conference completely dedicated to unmanned systems, AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2009 will be the industry highlight of the year and the single greatest opportunity to network with your peers and learn about the latest developments in the field.
Abstract Submission Process
- Abstracts must be submitted online.
- More than one abstract may be submitted for consideration, however submissions must be made separately (one abstract per submission).
- Abstracts of the proposed papers are to be between 150-200 words in length.
- The abstract should include a summary of the principal issues and conclusions of the paper. This information will assist program coordinators in selecting the most appropriate papers for presentation.
- The abstract submitter should be prepared to upload a 100 word vitae of the presenter upon submission of the abstract.
- Abstracts/papers that are judged by the Technical Committee to essentially be sales or marketing presentations of an organization’s products or capabilities will be rejected.
- Time allocations for paper presentations will be 25 minutes, including questions and answers.
Presenters must be available to speak on all of the days on which oral presentations are scheduled. The program categories will be assigned to certain days as determined by the Program Committee in order to achieve the best possible overall program. Requests to change day and/or program category will not be honored. If a speaker is unavailable to present, it is permissible for a substitute speaker to present the same paper. However it is not permissible for a speaker to give his presentation slot to another speaker presenting a paper that has not been previously reviewed and accepted by the Conference Committee.
If the number of abstract submissions continues to grow as it has been, it is very unlikely that any submitter will be afforded the opportunity to present more than one paper or poster session.
Abstract Evaluation Process
AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2009 Technical Committee uses the following criteria as a guide to evaluate abstracts. Evaluators are free to factor in other considerations from their experience and judgment that they deem relevant.
- Is the abstract identified correctly with respect to paper segment and category?
- Is the abstract coherent and readable thus providing some assurance that the presentation will be likewise?
- Does the abstract address a topic that is relevant to the industry/government/academic unmanned community? Does the abstract report on an advance to the body of unmanned systems knowledge or an important program of interest to the community?
- Is the author(s) well qualified to present the material and answer questions based on the submitted vitae and the author's organizational affiliation?
- Is the abstract complementary to or duplicative of other abstracts submitted to this or recent conferences?
- Does the abstract appear to be more suitable as a poster session/presentation?
Abstract Segments and Categories
Each abstract submitted for consideration should specify one class and one category listed below:

Abstract Listings
To provide conference attendees with the most accurate information in selecting the sessions they wish to attend, each selected abstract will be posted on the AUVSI website conference page as well as included in AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2009 Onsite Program. This applies to abstracts selected as both oral and poster presentations.
Pathfinder Chapter Best Paper Award
The Pathfinder Chapter of Huntsville, Alabama will be awarding a $1,000 check for their choice of “Best Paper” presented at the conference (only those papers presented during the technical sessions qualify). To be considered, authors must meet all published deadline dates.
