AUVSI's 2008 International Standards Workshop

Monday, June 9 • 8:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Online Discussion Forum • March 15 through May 28

This workshop addresses four areas for UAS standards:

A 60-day online dialogue on AUVSI's Forum is now open to the public for input on UAS standards and will remain open until May 28, 2008. Questions, comments and concerns brought up in the online discussion will serve as guidelines for the speakers and will ultimately shape the workshop program.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will receive a ballot to vote on the most pressing standards, best ideas, and overall relevance of the discussion. An analysis including summaries of the 60-day online dialogue, presentations, discussion notes, ballot results, and tables identifying the known standards for components of UAS systems will be conducted and sent to workshop participants.

Join the dialogue* on the AUVSI Institute Forum at http://www.unsysinst.org/forum/

* The online Forum is open to the public and may be viewed without conference registration. Contributors to the online forum will be required to register for a username and password at no cost.

Price: $125 (before May 9)/$175 (after May 9)

Meeting of ASTM International Committee F41 on Unmanned Maritime Vehicle (UMV) Systems

Monday, June 9 • 1:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Whether it's oceanographic research, recovery, exploration, assisting ocean-based industries or playing a critical role in national defense strategies, unmanned maritime vehicle (UMV) systems have a notable history – and are currently positioning for their next evolution. Help define this new frontier.

As emerging applications continue to push existing unmanned maritime systems to their limits, stakeholders have an urgent need to deploy new technologies for remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and unmanned surface vehicles (USVs). In order to meet the call of new discoveries and further advancements in both commercial and military applications, next generation UMV systems must provide for greater interoperability among various platforms, additional autonomous controls, and improved UMV-to-ship communications. A critical step in the evolution of these technologies is the development of consensus on industry standards that address ongoing product safety, performance and capabilities.

ASTM International invites you to the annual meeting of Committee F41 on Unmanned Maritime Vehicle Systems. Participate in the development of standards that will shape and influence new UMV systems designs and enable the realization of next-generation applications. Join stakeholders from the UMV systems industry, governments, trade associations and academia (for more information, see F41's schedule at http://www.astm.org/COMMIT/COMMITTEE/F41.htm).

ASTM meetings are open to any interested and affected party.

Price: $40 (required to offset food and meeting-related expenses)

Introduction to U.S. Export Controls for Unmanned Systems

Tuesday, June 10 • 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.

In the increasingly complex global marketplace for unmanned systems, U.S. export control rules and regulations are a challenging and potentially time-consuming part of any growing business. This seminar is designed to cover the basics and serve as an introduction to a more comprehensive course to be offered in the future. The topics listed below will be addressed, and there will be ample time to question experts from the U.S. Department of Commerce and experienced industry consultants. If you are in an unmanned systems related business, this is a seminar that you can't afford to miss.

Price: $75 (before May 9)/$125 (after May 9)

Expanding into New Markets: Understanding Barriers to Using Unmanned Systems in Public Safety Applications

Tuesday, June 10 • 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Join us in discussions with several Public Safety Officials to understand their needs, issues and policy barriers. Police, fire, search & rescue and other civil authorities will meet with industry to begin defining the issues during a panel discussion and information exchange meetings. The issues identified will form the basis for AUVSI's strategic thrust to shape policy, facilitate certifications and transition unmanned systems technology to the civil and commercial sectors.

Price: $25

AUVSI Foundation Youth Education Program

Thursday, June 12 • 8:00 – 11:00 a.m.

The AUVSI Foundation Youth Education Program is a free educational program open to middle and high school students. The program introduces future generations of scientists and engineers to the exciting world of unmanned systems. After a brief presentation, children will be taken in groups through the exhibit hall to visit with participating companies where they will learn about real world applications of their math and science lessons. Hands-on or interactive experiences will be conducted along the tour. Students will also have the opportunity to meet and speak to participants from AUVSI's 2008 student competitions.

Price: FREE (registration required)
